Weight... the gasoline air-cooled recip engines required less tubing and heat exchange resulting in lighter weight.
Fuel... even then, the oil companies had stroke. No pun intended.

BUT could it REVERSE THE PROP??
AS for the question about feasibility and why it went no further? I rather imagine Dan hit the nail on the head. With today's technology it might be more feasible than then.

Even if it was a feasable idea in todays modern era would you trust your life to flying in a steam driven plane. Imagine if just one of the steamlines ruptured or the whole boiler went. Not only do you face death from crashing but your last moments could be in excrutiating agony from scald burns.
Mind you you wouldn't run out of hot water for a brew LOL
