PC has died

Post by :FI:Nellip » Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:55 pm

Hi all

I posted something about this over in another thread in the Sessions area but thought I would put it here as well in case anyone has an opinion they can share?

"Hi Gadje

Thats very kind of you to offer. If I can get Teamspeak onto my laptop then maybe we can have a look at it later.

I know what caused the problem - a piece of software called Picture Package which came with a Sony camcorder. After I installed it the computer refused to switch off - it always restarted. I then uninstalled the software but now the PC won't boot at all - very brief blue screen and then restarts. It will now recognise the recovery CD but I did not want to reinstall XP if I can avoid it in case I loose stuff in "My Documents" for example.. The machine does have two hard drives so I guess I could install XP on the spare drive and get it to boot from there, and then access the files on the current main drive and see what the damage is?

Anyone think this would work?

:? "

I was able to restore my main XP from a second boot, though it did involve some trial and error.

You could (should imho) run chkdsk.

A second boot will let you access your old my Documents

Thanks Sneaky, chkdsk did the trick once I managed to get the command line working. =D]

I have now done a system restore to a point before I installed the camcorder software and machine seems to be OK. Error message suggested the problem was in the registry.

Now all I need to do is work out how I get the video of the camcorder................ :?

Is there S-video out, or composite out on the camcorder.
I use a Tevion capture device that works fine with my Hi8 or VCR.

(I bet it's just got one of those "unique to Sony" mini USB lead things)

Let me know the model and I can ask around.

I take it they just tell you to install the software. It wouldn't hurt them to bundle Vegas with the cam; instead you're stuck with that crock.
