I'm getting ready to upgrade to a Flat Screen for the desktop, and would appreciate recommendations. I'm current looking at ViewSonic (going with what I know) or LG (price).

What LCD do you use?
Size?
Resolution?
Standard or Wide Screen?
Speed in ms?


Recommendations on models to avoid would also be appreciated.

ive got a 19 inch samsung syncmaster 910T. Im pretty happy with it, all my games look quite nice with it. I use 1280x1024 for my windows res and for most games as well. I like both the samsung line for monitors and HD tv's. Both pretty crisp and clear and havent had a problem yet. Though mine is a few years old, im sure you can get a better version by now.

Can't imagine you might not get a widescreen. Sorry can't suggest any specific model. All I can say is when they gave me my new computer at work it came with an Acer LCD monitor, and despite being a cheap (I mean affordable) unit it still is great on the eyes.

I have that Dell 24" that Falcon is talking about, I would suggest it as a choice for an LCD upgrade.

One thing that you need to keep in mind though is the horsepower of your PC. You will need to game at 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 in order to maintain aspect ratio.

If you want a regular aspect monitor, I would also suggest the Dell 20" version. I have that one as well.

That is something significant to keep in mind. If I were thinking of picking up a widescreen I know certain games that I presently enjoy would have to be turned down (way down). But then again I wouldn't need to use AA so maybe that would help to compensate a little.

Curious Doc what's your rig again and can you comment on how it is handling some of the newer games? Hearing from some with really good machines having a little trouble running some of them, and I don't think they have the display set this high.

How do newer games run? Well mostly like butter even at 1920x1600 but I am starting to notice things like FSX, FEAR, and OBLIVION pushing the system to its maximum.

Oh and I still run IL2 at 1600x1200 just because I like to keep the FPS locked at 60 at all times while flying.

I would presume to be in decent shape until next Spring's lineup hits shelves at which time I will be looking to upgrade again.

Hey thanks, for me the most fun part is planning out a new build and getting it all tweaked out. I do game a lot actually so I can justify it with the wife somewhat since it is my only hobby and keeps me out of her hair for the most part.

You might want to check out the 2001FPW as well. The native resolution on that is lower at 1680x1050.

hey Dan, they're all nice as far as brands go, one thing to look for is the one with the fastest refresh, i've seen them as low as 2ms. the lower the number the faster the refresh rate.

Actually with the new study of web design coming up for me (CIW foundations/site designer), I'm actually considering buying a mac. The only computer I'll ever need then.

Though I'm serious about getting a mac. Probably a 2.0ghz 17" i-mac for €1200

While nice overall, MACs are way overpriced. You could build that same system and throw windows on it for about half that price.
