A bit of Jammin'?

Post by Badger » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:21 pm

Flyers

Sometimes late at night, I lay in my set, not only waiting for the chaps and the dogs far above trying to dig me out, to find the claymores I set there earlier, but also I think of flying things....

One of these thoughts has been: Do our kites seem a bit too reliable? I mean, have your guns ever jammed? Ever had your rudder cable snap? Your propeller fail? Your radiator freeze up? Had to turn back because of a blocked fuel line? I appreciate that the idea in the design is to simulate machines in tip top form and to keep the player playing (and interested), but has anyone had anything fail in this manner?

There are cocking leavers on many of the Japanese and Russian aircraft which appear to be there just for show, but surely no matter how reliable they were, they could jam if a dodgy round was chambered? Could this realism feature be just another switch in the Options which would be turned off if not wanted ?

I’m not picking holes in the sim as I love it, but would be interested to know what everyone thinks a very subtle hit of ‘failure realism’ would bring to the ‘experience’....

This is an old chestnut - been debated on various threads over on the UBI boards in the past.

I quite like the idea of having random failures - with a toggle to switch on and off in the difficulty settings - but I think the feature may require a lot of new coding and we sure won't get it in PF.

Still time to lobby for it to be included in SoW though........... :D

It is a grand idea and I would be all for it.

This kind of thing is already in the MSFS series so maybe we will see something like it in SoW hopefully.

Absolutely and it must be an old consideration, after all; why have your 262's engines flame out but your B25's plugs not get sooted up and fail on a long co-op flight?? (Slightly bemused face). :?:

I apprecate that Olegs team(s) considered this and opted for a 'selective trade off'.

Might be an idea for campaign mode with things like supply and groundcrew morale factored in.

Cant help thinking it smacks of masochism wishing it for DF's and coop's though.

C'mon as if we don't have enough frustration in the game to add THAT in. Although the only failure is when your control surfaces get shot up. I would really like windshield wipers like on the Mossie. When the oil smears your view it'll come in handy. You ever try using your polka dot shorts (with the big hole in it) to clean the glass?
