New PC - Moving old files

Post by :FI:Nellip » Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:36 pm

Well my shiny new PC arrived yesterday so should be able to return as your virtual cannon fodder over the holiday season :D

I was thinking about the nightmare of reinstalling everything on the new machine and came across a couple of programs which are supposed to make this easier (PC Mover and Transfer My PC). They move your program files, but also all your registry settings, e-mail accounts etc and you can apparently be selctive in what you move.

Cost is around £40 so I was wondering if any of you guys had used this type of application - and especially if you know of a cheaper way! :D

Take the hard drive out the old one and bung it in the new, use it as an emergency back up, and once its in, just sling all you need over to the new drive.

Thought of that - but the old hard drive is ATA and the new one is SATA so not sure that is possible?

Plus I want the old machine for the kids to use. :(

Not tried either I'm afraid. I've always taken the manual approach.

hmmm what about using ghost - usually on motherboard cd ;) (or some clones?) and choose direct copy options?

Why not get a CAT5 cable with one reversed end so you can hook one machine straight to the other and drag and drop whatever you want from the old beater? Or set up a network if you've a router and import all the stuff you want to keep?

Well finally got it all sorted - files moved across OK with PC Mover and most of the registry settings, email, internet, applications have come across OK.

Only program I have a problem with is (you guessed it) - FB/AEP/PF.

The game loads fine but as soon as I try to start a mission I get the following error:

"Mission loading failed: Landscape "mapname"/loan.ini loading error"????

Loads like I will have to reinstall after all :(

From what I've heard ...

if there is something missing like that

it is usually a patch order problem.

From Tully at UBI:

For standalone Pacific Fighters:

Install PF
Install patch pf_patch303.exe (100MB)
Install patch pf_patch401.exe (100MB)
Install patch pf_v402.exe (25.4MB)

For merged Forgotten Battles/Ace Expansion Pack/Pacific Fighters:

Install FB
Install AEP
Install PF
Install patch pf_patch303m.exe (100MB)
Install patch pf_patch401m.exe (141MB)
Install patch pf_v402m.exe (31MB)

You can get the correct patches at: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/pacificfi ... downloads/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
[Note] that the standalone patches do not have "m" in the file name and the merged patches do. Please note that some sites have had the file names swapped for the 4.02 and 4.02m patches. Please double check the file size matches the patch for your version before applying. 4.02 for standalone is about 25.4MB, 4.02m for merged is about 30MB ...

======

And, as you load EACH game and patch, test the whole compilation EACH time. Therefore you can better tell where the error may be.

Just a thought, hope it helps.

Thanks for the advice Falcon.

I decided to reinstall FB, AEP, PF and patches.

Things went OK until I got to PF. For some reason when I insert the disk it thinks there is still a copy on the PC - despite me removing it using "Add/Remove Programmes", and getting rid of any other traces using something called Magic Utilities? I now get a message saying "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid"??? :(

I have tried opening the PF disc and running the installer direct rather than using Autorun but just get the same message.

Anyone seen this before?

At the moment I have an install of FB AEP 2.0 which is running fine but no PF or patches?

IGNORE THE ABOVE - GOT IT SORTED. DOWNLOADED SOMETHING CALLED MICROSOFT INSTALLER CLEANUP UTILITY AND THAT DID THE TRICK. I NOW HAVE A CLEAN INSTALL OF FB+AEP+PF PATCHED TO 4.02M, SO I SHOULD BE STALLING OUT IN YOUR LINE OF FIRE AGAIN :D
