Folks!

First of all let me apologise for the twelve attempts to take off we unnecessarily went through in just two definetly flown missions. Due to several reasons mainly on the US side I saw myself as the host of these missions forced to try it over and over again. This won´t happen in the next session since we all agreed that airstarts seem to be the better solution for carrier based untis. :!:

Anyhow, I honestly do regret the high amount of restarts and I´d like to thank you for your apparently never ending patience. For those who were p***ed off about it I´d like to thank you for wasting your precious time on us. But ... hey! In my understanding that´s what it means to be a FI pilot anyway ... right? Taking it easy ... or not?

Nonetheless, ... get the recordings of Neil´s Pacific Campaign COOP mission plus the famous FI CV Takeoff Failures (66 MB) -> here* <- and enjoy them ...

Not wishing to cast aspersions - but as they seem to be flying around anyway - did those on red actually read my lovingly crafted mission brief?

I did have a few qualms about people getting off the USMC carriers in the Corsairs in mission 3, which is why I put the following in the brief:

IMPORTANT - attack is to be with napalm. To get off the flight deck, due to weight, you will need to do the following:
1. Jettison fuel tank (Ctrl "T" is default key) - if there are AI in the flight, lead pilot must order Squadron to drop tanks.
2. Release and reset chocks
3. Unfold wings
4. Start engine
5. Select landing flaps\
6. Full throttle
7. 120% mixture
8. Release chocks
9. Pray!

I am guessing a few people forgot either one or nine on the list  Without jettisoning the tank it was almost impossible to get airborne. Even with the tank gone it was still tricky. Unfortunately there is no loadout option for napalm without external fuel tank, but you can jettison them without a problem on the flight deck.

Oh well, one more mission from carriers (already written) and then I'll make sure the reds are land based only........... :D

Yes Neil we did! You should have heard us ...

"external tanks, right? ... we all did the chocks at start and reset? ... okay ... wings, WINGS man! ... the list doesn't include the tail wheel, lock it! ... not takeoff flaps, he says 'full' ... what's the default for increased mixture again?! ... remember, spool up to full power and release the chocks ... okay ... rolling! ...

"plop!"

"sploosh!"

"gurgle"

"gah!"

"iiiii-eeeeeeeee!"

Neil, I remember being bad at carrier t/o's back in dah day, but this was ... badder-est. Some got up once in seven ... eight tries, some got up half the time ... some got up only when there was a restart ... a very few got up each time show offs!. Are we that rusty?!? Shifting the blame away from us, cuz we're usually perfect, all I can think of is that we need more wind over the deck? ... maybe? What ever way it went, it was always a close call, almost a toss up if you would make it.

I do practice these missions a bit before I release them on the rest of you - and I did several test takeoffs with the Corsair (all as no1 so with shortest distance on flight deck). Following the instructions posted I found I could get of the deck every time - although it was not easy. I guess people are just rusty on carrier take-offs. Carriers were doing 40kph so should have been fast enough.

The biggest problem with this is that some people will get p*****d off with all the restarts and we will see numbers drift away from these Sunday sessions............

I will stay away from carrier based missions in future - after the next mission, we will stick to land based for the rest of this campaign and any I write in the future will definitely involve dry feet only

Yeah, I understand. Well ... we had fun no matter what.

The only other thing I could say is that the Corsair is one of the harder ac to t/o. Others are much easier. The zeros iirc practically spring off the deck.

40 kph? Can you raise it up a bit? Maybe try mph. It's much faster and really, better, if you consider the current exchange rate.

If I can recollect, putting the carrier speed at 60kph did the trick. You should'nt change your mind about carrier takeoffs Neil, perhaps just limit it to those who are confident, maybe just four aircraft taking off from carriers, I would'nt like to see a downturn in abilities, its a slippery slope to open cockpits, icons and the rest. Some of the best missions I ever did were ones that involved taking off and landing back on the carrier after a hectic fight with the foe, gave you a sense of achievment, plus you could start breathing normally again :) .

Stu is right about the F4U, its one of the hardest to take off in on a carrier, especially in inclement weather with a loadout, even the best of us would have had a few ring twitter moments. The Pacific theatre has always got my attention as its one of the hardest to succeed in when your playing on really dificult settings (no map icons). Just my preference of course, the more difficult something is the better you feel when you succeed. The problem a mission maker has is to balance the mission in such a way to please both the realism seeker and the once a week chap, no easy feat as Neil will tell you.

OK - lets have a rethink then.

A mixture of carrier and land based for both sides - with the Corsairs land based now for red and the Hellcats still from the CV. That way those masochists who want to fly from carriers can still do so. I'll also set the carriers to 60kph - or Imperial equivalent :D

I think we should have a convention that if you plonk a carrier based plane in the drink, you fly a land based one after the restart?
