9800 vs. 8800?

Post by :FI:Murph » Mon May 04, 2009 3:51 pm

I've been using the 8800 GTS OC, core bus 550, mem bus 792. It works very well, but lately I've noticed that the price of the 9800s has dropped considerably.
Is it that much better a card that it would be worth upgrading? I know there are newer generation cards out now, but I just can't afford one of them.

My understanding of it is that the 9800's were a re-branding of the 8800's by nvidia with very little in the way of real improvements, especially over say a 8800GTX

Im on GTX260's and they are a real leap forward over the 88/98's. You can put the settings up to max and ramp up the AA and AF settings with no real hit on framerates. You can only use one in IL2 because it just can't work with SLI but one is more than enough.

Falcon says the replacements for the 260's is on the way so they are bound to be dropping in price. I'd stick out for one if i were you.

Murph,

The 8800GTS 320/640, 8800 GT, 8800 GTS, 8800 GTS 512, 8800 GTX, 9800 GT, 9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+ and 9800 GX2 are all good cards. The 8800 GT is still one of the best, but upgrading between them may not be the best deal. The 260 is a fair jump up. The 260, 265 and the new niche board 275 would give you more headroom. Look for bundles, deals and warranties among the brands. You can save a nice chunk of cash by buying the reference card and OC'g beyond the OC boards.

Scott, I've been SLI-ing in IL2 for the past four years. Is it a Vista thing???

Links? Man, do I have GPU links!

I think it is Stu.

Frames are fine- its just that you get very small pauses all the time. Gregg had the same issue and tipped me off about going to single GPU. I spent about a day trying different drivers/ dll's but I just couldn't cure it. On a single 8600 it was an issue but a 260 eats IL2 whole.

Update Stu-

just out of curiosity I flipped the Nvidia control panel over to 'Nvidia recommended' (sure thats SLI) last night. Smooth as glass. How weird is that ?!.

I'll try it tonight if there is any flying on.
