Registry cleaner?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, EASY, cheap or free registry cleaner? I have RegClean, but it throws a list of hundreds of files at me that I am not eager to trash. My computer is freezing at odd times and I thought I'd check the registry first.

Yes Stu. I have 2 recomendations for you:

1. CCleaner is a good freeware thatalso does a good job on cleaning the registry.

and after that you might use

2. RegDefrag that Defrags and optimizes the Windows Registry.

My registry was sized from 140 to 120 Megabyte with RegDefrag.

The freeware version is very strong. Cleaned out 7G of crap from my cache. Ran all the free tool stuff and my OLD machine perked up noticeably.

I used the free stuff for now. It did a good job, but computer still freezes at rare intervals AND every time I run my anti-virus full scan. It freezes at 89-90% each time. Quick scans are good. Never freezes during games, usually during minimal usage like notebook or idle.

Sounds like temporary high CPU or hard disk useage Falcon.

Do you have Vista or XP? While I have installed Vista for my parents' machine I still use XP myself. Does Vista have Indexing or some other similar process(es)? Sounds like the OS might be trying to undertake a maintenance operation when the system isn't supposely busy.

Again, I really don't know how Vista operates, but I understand it is rather bloated. Check your CPU cycles when this is happening. It might be a hard disk operation like Indexing or Restore. Personally, I turn off all these sorts of things.

Finally, could it be an operation in your security software like a scan?

Really doubtful the issue lies in your Registry. And, while others will disagree, registry cleaners are not very effective in boosting performance, so get your money's worth and use a free one.

Try fighting an ice storm for 48 hours........................................... It was real, it was fun, but it damn sure wasn't real fun...

Sorry no pics. I had the night shift. Only one fatality attributed to the ice.. There would have been more if they hadn't forbade me to carry my guns.

Ice storm in Texas?

Well I heard the hell froze in Dallas on January, 20th.
Very strange...

Usually happens this time of year.. Really been wishing it would happen in July or August instead.... They insist on happening between December and February though..

We don't get much snow. Usually ice, and more ice. Falkky got more snow this winter than we have had so far. Go figure. This global warming stuff is sure perplexing..

Akshully the Global Warming thingie has worked out for us in New Mexico....

This Winter we haven't had to wear those under-thingies with the button-down trapdoor in the back.

O-kay, bought "Advanced System Care". Thanks Snee. My system sure needed it and runs smoother/quicker now.

Too bad it still freezes from time to time and always at 89-90% Kasperski full scan. I applied all Windows security updates, washed and ironed the registry and cleaned out the start menu among other things. Last time I scanned I got a scary >>MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION<<. It told me to undo last modifications, check installs and screw around w/BIOS cache and shadowing options.

I removed Windows SP 3 too. It was the cause of some freezing last fall. I removed it and all was well. I installed it again last month, but I don't think freezing started w/in a week of that.

Damn, it could be a thousand flippin' things.

I are lost.

Damn! It WAS SP3 that caused all the freezing!!!

Haven't tested Kasperski yet, but from what I read in their forums, it's a different, unrelated problem.
