New self build PC spec

Thinking of passing my PC onto one of the kids - 3 years old now and getting long in the tooth! Thats the PC not the kid

This is my thoughts on spec - any comments?

Processor Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4 GHz S775
MB XFX S775 nForce 780i DDR2 ATX Audio Lan 3 Way SLI
Case Thermaltake VA7000BWA Shark Case
PSU TBC - have a spare 600w unit at home I can utilise
RAM Crucial 2 x 1GB 240pin DIMM PC2-6400
HD 2 x Samsung Spinpoint 320GB 8MB
Graphics 2 x Nvidia 7600 GTX (already have) in SLI mode
OS Vista Home Premium 64 bit
Monitor Samsung 22" Wide screen 5ms LCD TFT

I realise the graphics are not quite up to the level of the rest of the system, and maybe more RAM would be useful, but I can upgrade those later and get this for around £700.

Stay away from this OS as long as you don´t like to fly any modified IL-2 version. I think my fellowman Airway is running this OS on his machine and he´s been able to join us since then ...

Yeah Vista 64 bit is an ass when it comes to the game. Stick with the 32 bit version or good old XP mate

£700 ? Hope that includes the cost of Vista
( I got a quote of £210 for ATI Quad 5600 CPU +fan ASUS MB + 2 GB ram for my re-fit)

Except for the OS, of course. Leave V64 alone alone alone alone alone.

As said above, go with V32 if you must, or use dependable, ancient XP.

I'm using 32 bit Vista- no problems at all to report. Very stable. Runs Il2 great.

I nowaday got 64bit Vista running well and the service packs helped a lot.
Together with some hardware and not so well programmed drivers it can make you go crazy anyway.
Some Hardware has still no 64bit drivers

I changed some hardware and now its running well.But be prepared to run into troubled if you don't precheck if your hardware is compatible with Vista and/or 64bit.

I have assembled my new machine but have obviously not got everything in the right place

There is power = lots of pretty blue LEDs on the mobo light up = but machine does not enter start up? Any one got any ideas or willing to spend some time on TS talking me through it?

Any beeping from your mainboard?

There is a beeping code on wich you can hear where the problem might be.

Is there at least anything showing up on the monitor while booting or not even the bios?

No bleeps, no fans spinning, nada - apart from the pretty blue lights

I think it might be the wiring for the on/off button? Does that sound like a possibility?

I struggled to understand some of the connections for the "System Panel Connector" - I did not seem to have enough wires to plug into it compared to the manual picture so looks like I will have to check this out. Mobo is an Asus Sriker Extreme if anyone has come across one of these before?

Could try a continuity test on the case panel switches.

A multimeter or battery and lamp will do . use 2 pieces of fuse wire pushed into switch plugs.

Test power and reset button.

Connections are usually marked, though you may need a spyglass to read on MB.

Check all jumper settings in manual.

Check youve not swapped power or HD LED leads to power or reset pins

Hi Nellip,

Sorry things haven't gone to plan for you.

Some things to try...

- Have you plugged the 8-pin power connector into it's socket which is above and to the left of the CPU?

- With regard to the "System Panel Connector", in most cases the ground/- is the black wire and the + is the coloured wire.

- On the I/O panel of the board (where you plug in your mouse, network cable, etc.) there should be a small panel which displays messages during the POST sequence after you press the power button. Does it show anything?

- Try powering on with just one graphics card and one stick of RAM installed.
