Trinidad for Dummies

Post by AltarBoy » Tue Mar 13, 2007 7:41 pm

Last week at the airport I was conversing with a visitor from the US and he was intrigued at the way we speak and the terms we use to describe things. So, if any of you get washed up on our shores or crash land your MiG-3 at the Queens Park Oval here are some tips to understand what we say (or try to say).

'Bounce meh dong, nah!'- Means when a Trini crosses a busy road and tempts fate by standing in front of an approaching vehicle, challenging the driver to do something rash.

Lime- Means to hang out somewhere.

Wine and Jam- During our annual Carnival, the gyrating bodies. It's better than p**n I tell ya! 8)

Bazodee- Dumbfounded. Like when I get up in the mornings.

NOTE: We have trouble pronouncing words with 'th' like we say things like tanks (thanks),

Gyul- Girl

Callaloo- A greenish slimey sidedish that tastes damn good!

Roti- An East-Indian flour-based pita-like bread.

Anyway, that's just a few. Tell us about your local language and customs and let's have some fun! :)
