Good day to you , gentlemen...
Good day to you , gentlemen...
Hi guys,
I've just applied to join the Fighting Irish and thought I'd pop in and say 'Hello'.
OK... so, a little bit about myself.
I'm a 34 year old Brit currently residing in Vancouver, Canada. I design video games for a living and have done for the past nine years. My main gaming passion is flight sims, but I've always been too much of a social inept to try my hand at online flying.
Well, that's not entirely true - I've dipped my toes in the flying waters of Hyperlobby a couple of times, but rapidly tired of getting slapped out of the sky every minute or so. As a consequence, I figured I needed a hard drinking, hard fighting outfit in my corner to ease me through the initial learning curve with equal measures of kindness, support, laughter and beer.
Where better to look for such qualities than with the Fighting Irish?
Looking at the Fighting Irish thread over at the Ubi forums was enough to convince me.
I make no claims about my flying abilities. On a good day, I might just pass as 'OK', but I'm a friendly chappy with a willingness to learn and a strong team spirit. I'm also fully equipped with beautifully modded Cougar NXT, Track IR3 Pro +VE, Simped rudders and a headset that I've never ever used before and feel utterly socially uncomfortable about. (Total online noob, remember...)
All-in-all, I'm really looking forward to proving my incompetence to you in the coming co-op meetings.
Cheers

Already done! In fact, it was FI:Falcon from the Recruitment Office that pointed me over here after he'd received my application.
Ack! Socialising on my first day! Whatever next...

Welcome mate!
Actually I just invited you to our Historic Encounters over at SimHQ mate. Click on my banner for more information. A bit early for you (6:00 p.m. start time), especially if you have kids, but hoping you give it some consideration. There are other offerings of course to consider, such as the main Squadron fun time on Sunday.
Again welcome Brit/Canadian from a Maritime mate.

Thanks for dropping in to reply, both here and at SimHQ.:FI:TacticalS! wrote:Welcome mate!

The Historical Encounters sound great, but getting home for 6 on a Friday is not the easiest thing for me.
Still, I should be around on Sundays. FI:Falcon mentioned a Hyperlobby meet tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:30 (CT). I'm assuming that this translates to 12:30PM here on the Pacific coast?
Do I need to know anything in terms of server passwords or Teamspeak IP addresses? I've never used any online comms stuff, so I'm liable to run straight into a wall of learning tomorrow before I even get close to the cockpit...

Pizz,
Great to see you on-line today. Sorry you only got a wee bit of a co-op and two bits of DF'n, but it was a pleasure to meet you.
The next scheduled thing I know is Tac's Historic Encounters on Friday.
Check HL during the week for any of us flying and stay in touch with us here in the forums.
Hope to see you next Sunday,

If it hadn't been for my strange, never-seen-before, complete-and-total-keyboard lockup, I suspect I would have had a blast. The initial dogfighting didn't really appeal to me because I lack most of the skills required to compete against human opponent, but I was thoroughly enjoying the co-op. The whole environment felt so much richer for the presence of real people and real communication. It was also nice to have practical and immediate help with elements such as CEM. I suspect that I'm going to learn a lot over the coming weeks.
The biggest frustration, however, was listening to everyone recovering over comms but not being able to take part in it. Synchronising the landings after a successful mission sounded like enormous fun. It was also pretty cool listening to everyone trying to reform after taking out the transports and listening to all of the help and advice being handed out about finding your respective ways home. All of this is exactly what I was hoping for - a fun, easy-going group of people who have a good laugh outside of the missions but then adopt a pleasant but not overbearing professionalism during the missions.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this Friday, but I'll definitely be up for the next meet after that.
Cheers and thanks for having me along
