In the mid 70's, I was in one of the last "pure gunfighter" squadrons left in the fleet. I was in VF-201, a "reserve" squadron of F-8J Crusaders made by LTV. AWESOME machine and a born Mig Killer.
Heck it could even fly with the wings FOLDED!!!

LTV was all that was left of Chance-Vought of F-4U fame. It was and still a conglomeration called Ling-Temco-Vought.
Those old F-8's were and ordnanceman's dream! 4 old, yet very reliable Mk-12 20mm cannons and sidewinder rails. A variable incidence wing gave it some great handling ability a slow speed. It only had one engine. The new navy doesn't like that.
We were down in Miramar Cal, "Fighter Town", on a deployment the first time I saw the brand new Tomcats. Those things are HUGE!
Lots of F-8 stuff here.http://www.cloudnet.com/~djohnson/index.html
We used to have a lot of fun shooting the "tompions" out the guns at unsuspecting avionics types. The tompions were yellow plastic plugs that kept trash out of the gun barrels. Those old Mk-12's (of Hispano lineage) were electrically fired and test ammo, ( an empty case witha LOUD primer installed) was readily available to enterprising types such as myself.
