AVG free edition

Post by :FI:Sneaky_Russian » Wed Nov 01, 2006 5:44 pm

Just got a reminder and DL'd the new free AVG anti virus 7.5 and AVG free anti-spyware.

The anti spyware picked up 90 items ,1 serious, and cleaned them all.
I'm impressed. Quarantine, delete and file shredder options all for free.

Still using Avast as well (cant be too careful)

Better read this from PC World.

Everyone knows you need antivirus software to combat known threats, but what about those viruses that sneak under the radar before code is written to counteract them? AVG Anti-None of the three free antivirus products tested for the "The New Virus Fighters" ranked highly, but Grisoft's AVG Antivirus Free Edition holds the distinct honor of having placed last among all ten paid and free contenders due to a clunky interface, the omission of significant features, and below-average performance.
The main interface provides just three options: Scan Computer, Scan Selected Areas, and Check For Updates. Options on the console's left panel, such as the Scheduler, lead to notifications that the features you seek exist only in the paid version of the product, AVG Professional.

In our performance tests, AVG Free Edition ranked second to last. (Alwil Software's free Avast Home Edition ranked last.) While AVG Free Edition caught nearly 100 percent of bots and zombies in our collection of zoo malware, it caught a disappointing 65 percent of Trojan horses. It ranked second-to-last in our heuristics tests--detecting just 11 percent of worms and 8 percent of backdoor programs using one-month-old virus data.

Hey, Sneaky if you're serious about protection then I recommend BitDefender Pro or Norton Anti-Virus.

That seems to refer to 7.1

I just installed 7.5 free, the scheduler is active in this release

You should be concerned about the virus tests though. No anti-virus is perfect and I guess AVG is free. I just ran Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and got no viruses..hmmm sometimes that makes me nervous. I like BitDefender but my subscription ran out.

Guess there will always be new threats. The best protection has to be have a backup disc.

Yes NAV didn't inform me but the scan showed everything clean. The only downside is that I had to take off my ZoneAlarm firewall because it conflicts with NAV. I'm searching for another good personal firewall.

Now I see why you're giving that phone the Wesley Willis treatment

I guess when it comes to the free stuff some compromises have to be made.

Avast caught a worm and crushed it for me today ( without asking for me to write a cheque)
