one horsepower..

He's 6'3" and his old paint hoss is BIG. The horse is one of the best I ever messed with. Can't steer rope off that mutt, when he sets back and the slack goes out of the rope, he has a tendency to break to poor steer's neck. Handy to have when ropin bulls.

Does that horse always have that mean look in the eye? It looks pretty mad.

neat, Willie!

sigh... man, i love horses. i grew up with 'em, lived and breathed them till i went into the Army. my brother still has about a dozen of them. he still tries to get me to ride with him, but i'm just too damned old and too fat now and i can't afford to fall and break a hip or leg or spine. lol. and that's sad... cause i still love them and still "remember" how to ride just as good as i ever did... can just close my eyes and BE back in the saddle on a good horse.

we had horses all of my life... but my first VERY "own" horse was a sweet, lil' saddle mare... jet black except for one white right front stocking... her name was Champ (after Gene Autry's Champ, of course.) Dad bought her for me on my 7th birhday... her and a Big Texas western saddle and a new leather bridel. oh boy! i felt like i was TEN feet tall...i was so happy that day! me and Champ got along perfectly even from the first day and i spent many an hour riding that horse all over our 500 acre farm/ranch.

there was this little dirt bank...about maybe four feet high or so... in a small gully or wash out behind the main barn... one day i discovered that Champ could "jump" that little dirt bank with no problem (with me on her back) and man it was just like flying! wow!

the only problem she had was that when she got tired of hauling my ass around, Champ would start to booger hunt.... lol! in other words, she would start "expecting" some big terrible monster to JUMP out from behind a stray bush or tree... lol! we'd be cantering along and suddenly she would ZIG-ZAG and i would be left sitting about five foot or so in the air with no horse under me. plop! there would go my butt right into the dirt!

i pretty quickly learned to EXPECT her little ZIG-ZAG after a while of riding and she could no longer un-saddle me so easily...she seemed soooo disappointed. lol! i had many other horses after she got too old to ride and we ended up selling her...but none that made me feel so proud to be a horseman. i will never forget, ole Champ.

thanks for reminding me of my past, Willie.

Falc,

I guess I forgot to mention that lad is 260lbs. with pretty much zero body fat? I'm glad he's on my side. ;)

Beo,

I rode a barn soured horse one time and tried to cure her wormy old ass. Come to find out, she was an ex bucking horse. She would go into a fit and try to stick all four feet all the way to China. Bucking like that on hard ground makes your nose bleed from the shock. She and I tried to kill each other for about 2 weeks. She went from throwing her tantrum after 15 minutes to about 2 hours in that length of time. She had one eye swollen shut, I had a black eye. Her lip was bloody and I had a few loose teeth. We both had multiple other contusions and aches.

The lady that owned her wanted her girls to be able to ride her.. FFS, that old nag was a water moccasin in disguise. After she broke my saddle by rearing up and jumping over backwards ( trying her damndest to sqash me in the process), I saw that wreck coming and jumped loose before she hit paydirt.

I then sat on her head and smoked a cigarette. I was careful to dump the ashes in her nose. ;) I let her up and was in the saddle before she was all the way up. As soon as she got her feet under her, she went over backwards again, only this time into a tree! Finished off my saddle with that move. I led her back to the barn and offered to cure the bitch with a well placed 30-30 slug. Her owner didn't agree to that solution. She did agree to turn that old wHorse out ot pasture as brood mare though.

Monte Walsh didn't have nothin on me when I was 18. I rode horses and chased cattle every where except up a tree and down a hollow log from the time I was 6 until I was 45. Takes TOO damn long to heal up after the wrecks nowadays. I remember most all of them very clearly on cold damp mornings nowadays.

If ya ever get a chance, find a copy of MONTE WALSH. They made a 2 movies from the book. The first was with Lee Marvin and the second was with Tom Selleck. The book still outshines 'em all.

As far as ol JJ having a mean look in his eye? Nah, he's the easiest goin mutt I've seen in a lot of years. My nephew, on the other hand, can get sideways in heartbeat and tear up a lot of shtoof..

He can drink, although his choice of suds leaves a LOT to be desired. He likes Budweiser and Corona..... :-& AND he likes to put a slice of lime in the Corona!! :O~

He's young, he'll learn.

The horse is JJ. :D
