STARFORCE the latest evidence

Post by :FI:Sneaky_Russian » Fri Feb 10, 2006 3:45 pm

Hope no ones been cursed by this, but after the initial panic the body of evidence against Starforce is growing.

Fortunately the only ill-effect I had when it covertly installed in a ColinMcRae Demo was a slowdown in burn speed, all now resolved by removing the nasty little thang. :CX

Should rage about it in the Rage Page.. its a good one

I could write an essay on hate with StarForce... more popularly known as StarFu... oh won't go there.

I feel my blood boiling just thinking about it, its nothing more then a virus that has no right policing my computer and tampering with 'my stuff'!

(9 seconds later)

and 10...

An interesting rage...

...but I've not heard of this.

The forum via the link was certainly lacking anything good to say about StarForce, but after all the bitching...is there a list out there of the games/companies that currently use this apparent piece of shyte? It would be most helpful.

Sounds scary, especially in light of my current probs with my CDRW.

Checking for Starforce

Post by :FI:Sneaky_Russian » Sat Feb 11, 2006 2:23 am

There are listings on the Analogues site.

To check for Starforce on your PC go to Control Panrl, System,Hardware,
Device Manager, select VIEW on toolbar and
check "show hidden devices" ( and they call me Sneaky! these
guys take the biscuit ).
Anyway if it's there it'll show up now and you can act accordingly.
Any software you have that uses Starforce will not load once it is removed

Not found.

It's not on my PC.

I noted that LOMAC Flaming Cliffs is in the game list.

I also know that some other members have LOMAC FC, and are not experiencing the issues/horrors described by some.

The gent in the Ubi forum at least had some real numbers to work with, while the ranters made "blanket" statements.

I'll discuss this further with the LOMAC owners among us before making any judgement.

I remeber a similar scare about HL. :)

No serious problems here

Post by :FI:Sneaky_Russian » Sat Feb 11, 2006 10:13 pm

I did notice an increase in burn speeds when I removed it, which counts for a lot when I'm doing a batch of demo's. but none of the nightmares reported at analogue.

I'll reserve judgement till things are a bit more certain, but will steer clear of it because of the SATA issues that were reported because thats my next planned upgrade ^:)

Dont panic - just get upset about the way it re-configures.

Is it somekind of anti-copying program?

Well... I think that the hackers always find their way to do what they do...
