Austin is 180 miles South of me. A bit too far to just go see. :(

Would be neat to see all the old stoof. First I've heard of it and you find it. Got to love the internet.

Thanks for the heads up. :)

How's your sled comin along? Warm enough to go blasting around yet?

Been in the high 90's here all week. TOO damn early in the year to be this hot.

It's just a wee day trip for sure!

Remember folks ...

you need outriders, a trail boss,

and a good tail wind

just to make it to the nearest Walmart in Texas in one day!

Fal "in th'wee state to the right" con

and Fen, I hear they're showing the new Saabs in the Kiev Auto Show this week! (May 23-29) Take some pics there and post'em, okay?!

Glad I ain't havin to deal with that humidity. [-( Been there, done that. Lived in northern Lousiana from 7th grade through college days.

Now be careful Falcon, Alaskans may be offended and divide their state in half making Texas the 3rd largest state in the USA instead of the 2nd!

If you melted all the ice and snow of Alaska...

Texas would be the biggest state in the union...

At least, that's what all my Texan relatives keep telling me...

Bike?

Post by :FI:Fenian » Thu May 26, 2005 8:59 pm

It appears I had a preignition problem, or a lack of gas, or... a clogged filter....

Last week I went for a short ride (20km) as I was nearing home I heard a Dog-unearthly rattle and the bike just died on me.

I was sure it had come from the transmission (gearbox) - but when I removed the right cylinder head, this is what confronted me:

Image

So, I've had to pull the other cylinder too to check it (it's ok) and have dropped the oilpan to get rid of the crunchy bits (of which there are many).

The head is not in good condition - the valves are leaking badly, and it'd prolly be cheaper/easier for me to buy a secondhand head than get this one fixed...

Image

So... That's how the bike is doing right now

Looks like I won't be riding much this summer - a complete teardown and rebuild lies ahead I think..... :(

:( DAYUMM!!

Blowing a hole in a piston like that SUCKS!!

I didn't hink those things had that much compression. Probably a lean burn situation that turned to a detonation.

Either way, it still sucks bilgewater.

Be sure and get the timing right and maybe go up a jet size or two when ya go back with it. ;) Gas is cheap compared to new parts.

I run my big twins with the jets in the carb just shy of fouling the plugs. It helps to cool that combustion chamber. Air cooled engine management is a bit different than water cooled stoof. My gas mileage sucks compared to the yups that like to brag about how great theirs is. However, the chrome on my exhausts doesn't turn blue. ;)

Most definitely take Willie's advice and be careful re your timing!

Good point about cooling, Willie!

I think

Post by :FI:Fenian » Sun May 29, 2005 1:30 pm

that it may have been caused by fuel starvation. The fuel line to the right side carb was not flowing at full speed, compared to the left side. I think my petcock may need a good blow  Get all of those bits of rusty tank out of it ;)

I'm gonna try to find some sort of balance pipe solution and put nipples on my cargbs in order to balance them properly, once my new head and pistons arrive... I beleive there is a kit out there somewhere called a Russkij Turbo :)

Fen,
Geezzz, looks like what happened to my number three cylinder on my old VW Bettle, except i couldn't find the piston! Running lean on air cooled engines is a real bad thing. As expensive as gas is, its still cheaper than pistons and heads. Good luck with the repair.
