I hate to defend BP but what they do is actually quite complicated and very other companies can do this.

I no an Oil engineer who designs risers for a living and BP have managed to try things in the last few weeks that would normally take 6-18 months to design, test etc

that said their PR and response hasn't been the best

Interesting news coverage:

BP's most recently submitted Emergency Response Plan, while capable of recovering more oil than the other companies, included "saving the walruses in the Gulf of Mexico" and was written by a scientist who had already been dead for the five years previous.

Further investigation revealed that except for minor wording changes ALL the major oil companies had submitted, word for word, an identical plan.

Makes you wonder who's minding the henhouse.
