I need to share my pain- sorry

i've got my new HD, had Vista re-installed. Got the f'ing thing home and started by installing video drivers, bang. monitor stops working every f'ing time you start the PC. its booted up but the only way you can get the screen to work is to unplug the monitor, plug it back in and it works (in low res). Farted around with control panel/ Nvidia settings, card drivers/ monitor drivers for most of last night- buttkiss.
About four f'ing hours of trawling through posts on obscure tech sites today (aren't they a lot of weirdos out there) and its a documented Vista issue when using a HDMI connection.F'd around with stripping out drivers etc, putting them back in and it works. saitek stuff back on, trackir, HL, '46, 408, UI1.1.
Im so sick of f'ing computers I've switched the damn thing off and come downstairs for beer. Will return on Sunday. If its broke its going out of the f'ing window and im getting a Mac.
PS- could someone tell me how to change the size of icons on the desktop- mine are bigger than they used to be. Thanks

Hi Scott, sorry to hear your struggle with Vista (I'm not a vista fan myself).
But to answer your question on the desktop Icons, Right click somewhere on the screen and choose "View" this should pop a list of;
Large Icons;
Medium Icons; and
Classic Icons.

We've all been there Richard - I still have nightmares about my new PC build last year
If you need any assistance/moral support then give me a bell - not sure how much use I'd be but sometimes 2 heads are better than 1.

thanks Neil,
I reckon that apart from sorting out the game itself- controls and settings etc i'm about there.
Lost most of my Albanian goat p**n though.

Scott it sounds like when your booting into windows it's having a problem with the primary dispay settings, when your unplugging and replugging its changing over to your secondary output settings. these settings are generally very poor.
when you installed the driver did everything go ok? no errors etc?
Did you change the screen res to something your screen can't cope with?
the first thing i would do is go into safe mode and check the driver has installed ok(when switcing on computer keep hitting F8 button, when menu appears choose safe mode.)
go to start and type devmgmt.msc in the run box. This takes you into device manager. double click on display adapters and see if you have any splats next to your card. I don't use Vista so it may be slightly different.
*Edit
as I post this i see you may have got it sorted! oh well..

Should have just re-installed XP.
Vista's not worth the trouble.
Windows 7 is just Vista with some of the bugs (not nearly enough!) removed.
XP is absolutely my last MS OS, and though I'll hang on to it for a while...
I agree with Maciej.
If I have to put that much effort into a MS product, my next OS will be SuSe Enterprise Lunix or (K)Ubuntu. I'd rather spend the time with an OS that is cleaner, more secure, and doesn't assume all I want is eye candy and constant reminders that if I should capriciously decide to use my PC I'm at fault for any security issues. I've partitioned my HD and done basic installs of both, and so far have been very satisfied with results. Once I get the Networking figured out the next project is to get 46 installed and verify how well it works using the WINE API. Reports at WINEHq have been good, but I'm not sure how it will handle the AAA mods.
