ok, getting used to settings on realistic.......

OMG....
I can get off the ground, it ain't pretty yet but better than skidding across the runway. Landing, well at least I don't actually have to pay for the landing gear scattered accross the runway.
However, any tips on navigation would be much appreciated.

Take a lot of getting used to. I started very recently by having nearly everything on realistic and just switching a couple of bits on - i.e. map icons / route - so I could worry about my flyin' and dyin' rather than just getting lost.
You can also try and an easier difficulty level and practice navigation on a quick mission builder.
Then combine the two

ref bf109 take off/landing...... Hmmmm, looks easy don't it......
Well 1 out of 10 landing attempts is better than the 1 of 25 so getting there. But it is kinda cool to watch your plane fly apart too......

lol, just keep practicing mate, you'll get there
Make sure you have your flaps (and gear) down and plenty of space on your approach. I usually lose a load of altitude when I spot the base and I'm getting into position and allow as much space as possible to get myself lined up at at the right speed. Give yourself as much time as possible and try to touch down right at the end of the runway with the power low (20% or less in my experience - which isn't much!).

Landing:
LIne up on the runway about 5k away at a reduced speed. Usually 170-180 kmh.
Point your nose just below the end of the runway.
Apply flaps to slow your descent and help keep your speed in range. Use Throttle as necessary.
Lower Gear.
When approaching the end of the runway, apply Landing Flaps.
At runway end, chop your throttle to "0", raise your nose (flare), and allow the plane to settle and land.
Requires a little practice, but works very nicely.

Some tips on navigation: Get a compass or a spinner of some sort with the hedings written down (helps with orientation). I made one out of one of the clear plastic disc´s that come in a stack of CD´s where I wrote down a big N,E,S,W in the right places and topped it of with oposit directions in smaller letter´s ...(I´m sure you understand what I mean)
Allso have pencil and paper handy and take notes of directions before take-off(saves time when under fire and help´s finding your way home)
