Graphic card has died

My Radeon X700 died today
Crazy screen colours, crash and burning smell - and when I opened the case a melted mess where the fan used to be
So what do I replace with? Toying with either a X1950 Pro 512MB - £118 or a Geforce 8600 GTS 256MB for £125? My main concern is power supply - I have a 350w unit but I don't know if these new cards will draw too many watts?
Any advice from the tech guru's out there?

Nellip,
I just installed a AGP X1950Pro 512MB last December.
Its brilliant but had to get a new power supply.
350W won't cut the mustard with the new generation cards. I had to get a 650W (although I've read that 450W will suffice) with 20amps across the 12v rail but you may need to check the spec of the card as I don't know if this differs from maker to maker.
Don't have any experience of the NVidea cards so can't comment there.
If you're AGP then I would recommend the X1950Pro.
Best of luck m8.

My X1600 was working OK with the stock 350w PSU (till the psu failed - any clues there? - anyhow on 600w PSU now)

What are the specs of your CPU/RAM etc? Also, if you are going to keep your PC for a while longer, my suggestion is to go for an 8600 series card instead of the 1900 series.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Due to the PS issue I decided to go with an ATI X1550 - for £45. Should have it in a couple of days.
Wife hinted we could get a new machine later this year so looks good domestically if I am more frugal now - playing the long game

Statistically speaking our wives will out live us. That's the long game mate. Spend if you got the cash man.

I concur with Tacts. My wife's been telling me I don't need a new pc. She didn't complain when I bought that car for her though. Boy, wimmin!

Well I just ordered a new car as well - brand new top of the range Honda CR-V arrives in about a month so can't complain too much - wife drives an 8 year old Mazda

More bloody reliable than a Volvo mate
8 years and all it's ever had is a standard service - nothing has broken, it's even still got the original exhaust!

I owned an
RX-7 for many a year and it was great.
I thought my
Pinto was pretty cool too at the time though ...

I bought der wiff a Nissan Almera with all kinds of gizmos. I'm still looking for the button that turns it into a mini attack sub.
My nutcase brother-in-law went and install a sound system with big sub-woofers so much so there's no more space in the trunk to put the groceries. And to top it off he went and got chrome rims worth TT$8,000

Because the company car I have at the moment has to go back at the end of this month when I start a new job. I have a Toyota Prius hybrid at the moment because the tax I pay on it is based on the CO2 emissions, but the CRV will be my own car.
and the new card arrived in the post this morning - so barring installation issues I should be flying again soon
