I have a Linksys Router (WCG200). It's not an "N" type, but the configuration method should be the same.
Open your web browser.
In the address field type 192.168.0.1 to access your router. You'll get a Username and Password request.
DO NOT type in a user name.
For the Password type "admin", click enter. This will get you to the internal configuration utility for your router. Once you're in, you can change the password (I highly recommend it, particularly if it's a wirelss router!)
If your utility is the same as mine (or reasonably similar) it will open to the "Status" tab. Additional tabs should be provided for "Setup", "Wireless", "Security", "Access Restrictions", "Internet and Gaming", and "Administration".
"Status": Provides only assorted information for Gateway, Connection, and Local Network.
"Setup": Unless you have a business account leave this page alone! The radio button should be in the "Obtain IP Adress Automatically" location.
"Wireless": Allows for basic and advanced setups for wireless networking. Also addresses Security and Network access for other devices/PC's in your home.
"Security": Allows for Firewall filters and VPN (Virtual Private Network) settings. In the FIREWALL section ENABLE Firewall, and ENABLE "Block Anonymous Internet Requests"! Leave the other filters at default values!
IGNORE the VPN Passthrough section unless you're operating through a VPN, such as in an office or corporate atmosphere.
"Access Restrictions": Fairly self-explanatory. Allows for Website blocking, Timed Access, and some Filtering. Used mainly by administrators of multi-PC offices to keep the idiots from cruising for p**n, or by parents for controlling kids' access to the network.
"APPLICATIONS AND GAMING": In the "Port Range Forwarding" section you set the port ranges for specific programs you have that need to access the internet. Setup is basically the same as in the Windows Firewall.
My settings are: Application - Il2FB; Port Range - Start 21000, End 21000; Protocol - BOTH, IP Address - 192.168.0.1; and a "check" in the ENABLE box.
Ignore the "Port Triggering" and DMZ sections until you are more familiar with the utility.
"Administration": In the Security section you set up your Password. Use the Diagnostics section to test your ping. Leave the Advanced section at defaults.
KEEP IN MIND: Once you have made any change on any page with a "Save" tab at the page bottom you MUST check "Save" before moving to another section or Tab! Otherwise any changes will be lost and you get to start all over again.
KEEP IN MIND: If you change your password or forget it, the unit should be re-settable to defaults by inserting a paper clip or other pointy object into the "Reset" hole at the back of the unit for 30 seconds. It will reset to factory defaults.
The Linksys.com site has plenty of additional information, and the User Guide on your CD is also helpful. Just remember that it was not written by English or Americans, so sometimes you have to dick with their translations to understand what they are trying to tell you. The 1-800 number is in the Philippines, so be prepared.
