Graphics settings

I ramped up all the settings in conf.ini when I got the X1600 and thought "This is great"

Now when I check conf.ini it says:

Water=1

I can enter and save higher values, but each time I run Il2 (or 46) it gets set back to 1

I've tried Maximum settings,custom settings, and ATI X800 settings in il2setup.exe all with the same (non)result.

Thanks Snee,

I just checked and I have it at "3". I s'pose what I have is the best that it gets.

[Render_OpenGL]
Water=1 Water = 0
Fastest water, without ground reflection
Water = 1
Normal water: ground and clouds reflections, cloud shadows
Water = 2
Perfect water: same as Water = 1, plus wavy ground reflections and weather-dependant wave types
Water = 3
Perfect water: same as Water = 1, plus wavy ground reflections and weather-dependant wave types. Nvidia SM3.0 only. Use water=2 for ATI cards
Well got, water=2 now having followed Coasties guide.
I'd assumed ATI had caught up and was capable of running water=3 with the x1600, but apparently not.

yep, im using water2 with the X1900GT. ATI has the only card that will not go higher than water 2. :?

Kinda...

I guess the people that do reviews and write specs dont fly il2

Just to make you ATI boys feel better, I just got an Nvidia 7800GS and I run it on water 2 because for me it looks the best of the lot.

3 is too shimmery when looking into distance.
4 shimmers a bit too and although runnable the frame rate drops is not worth it. However if water 2 was the highest setting with the corresponding drop in frames I'd probally still run it at that.

I am with Gadje on this one as well. I only do Water 2 even though I could run higher settings with SLI. IMO 3 is not really worth the performance hit.

I don't know if this may be of any help re water on ATI cards :

DL'd the new Catalyst and drivers today after reading posts at Ubi.
Quite a noticeable difference both in water detail and smoothness/fps

Glad to hear it, Sneaky!

Traditionally, ATI has never been a big supporter of OpenGL, thus some advantages with the Nvidia cards. My last try was back in '97 and I wasn't pleased.

But they've come a long way and I had heard the latest Catalyst drivers are a big help.

I'm currently using an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 in my laptop and it does surprisingly well for most of my games, though for Il-2 it only works good for about 15 minutes into a mission. (I was hoping I could take my stick with me on a road trip. Alas, no joy. :cry: ) Oh, well. I gues I'll just HAVE to satisfy myself with Ghost Recon, Morrowind, Oblivion, or CoDUO. :D
