Looking for an upgrade to my tired old ATI9200, still on 32 bit machine here with AMD2600+ CPU. Can anyone suggest what to go for?

it all depends how much you wanna spend on the upgrade. I understand that you are staying with AGP standard, right?
6800 series of Nvidia are very good, 6600 are good combination of quality and value. If you wanna stick with ATI than maybe one of the X series, for instance X700 or X800/850 would do.
If you are going to use the card with this CPU than there is no use in buying a monster card as it wil not be used fully with this CPU , i presume. Of course, if you wish to upgrade in the fure such components as CPU, motherbouard and RAM, than this is sth completly different.
I am using Nvidia 6800 GT, and im very satisfied.

I would say for you an X1600 or 6600GT or even 7600GT should be a good choice.
You are kind of limited since your CPU is a bit dated and the fact that you are still running AGP. I would not spend more than $150 on an upgrade at this point.

I had r9250 three or so months ago, and then upgraded to r9600 for only 50€. But as doc said, its better not to spend more that 150 at this point.

Indeed often over looked is the practical need to balance the CPU with the video card. It is always very interesting to see benchmarks of combinations of CPUs and video cards, as they will show the same (or almost the same) fps in certain games using a particular CPU even though more powerful video cards are being tested.
For me, though at the time I could have purchased an AGP 6800 Ultra card, I settled for the 6800 OC 256MB card given my upgraded CPU was only 3.06 P4 HT. Even at that it is probably pushing the envelope.
Google around about this topic mate. Like many things its a balancing act of sorts.
Happy shopping!

I would say this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130036" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102680" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Would be a great choice for you. My personal reccomendation would be the X1600 at that price point.
Or go for an even better deal with the 256MB version:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102665" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You WILL notice a huge improvement either way as the 9250 is nowhere near either of those in performance.

Im on a P4 3Gb with a 6600 and 1GB of Ram
Going to go to 2 GB Ram and then it will be the end for this machine- not too bad- built it in 2003.I would like to hang on 'till BoB is out before commiting to a new PC ( so would my dearest other half).

Thats far better than my x800, and mine runs fine with IL2, so you should be set! Get a crossfire chipset based motherboard, another X1600 card and youre even more set
