A pretty crazy story from BBC news:-

The Police must be as thick as him!

Two short planks worth.

Sticking gears( or auto ) in neutral and switching off engine work quite well in this situation. .... so long as you remember to turn the key back so's the steering lock don't come on!!!!

This scenario really winds me up in movies-let alone real life

I suppose you'd probbaly pabic though.Rational thought tends to leave people in such situations but it just shows how a cool head really can save your life ;)

Did'nt Ford have a problem with cruise control a while back too?

see also BMW product recall
(Oh F**k I'm turning into Jeremy Clarkson)

as long as I can have an English Electric Lightning parked out front of my house I dont mind. Now that would do the Traffic wardens heads in !

I owned an Audi back when many Audi models were reported to have a ghost on the gas pedal. (~'89) It was true! At least three times in the two years I had it the pedal just ... pressed down!

Ak!

Before selling the darn thing my family went to Disney World in Orlando. While parking in one of the huge parking lots and waiting for a constant stream of kids crossing in front of me to thin out the pedal slammed down to the floor.

Thank dog I was prepared.

I jumped on the brakes and just about threw the keys out of the window trying to shut off the engine. The possessed machine had leapt about two feet and the engine sound had scared everyone in the area.

I rode the brake home, the Audi man said, "tough luck", I traded it in for an old Ford Fairmont.

"Move along now... nothing to see here... go on! Have ye no homes to go to???"

"A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."

There was a similar incident here in the US about ten years ago. Stuck troutle, auto transmission would not go into neutral, and coundn't kill the engine. The vehicle apparently had several malfunctions at once. Ploice finally stopped the vehicle by driving a police vehicle in front and allowing the run away car to ram it. The driver of the run away vehicle was talking to 911 on the cell phone the whole time.

Indeed. So many great lines in that movie.

Dodge Caravans had a short that would disable the radio and activate the windshield wipers. That was amusing. Oh and flash the hazard lights if that wasn't enough, if memory serves me. (What kind of wiring conflagation would do THAT???!!)

What I don't understand is that the ol'd duce and a halfs my neighbour up the road has, have never needed a water pump and have not needed a gas tank. And they have been in Korea.
