yep, an old fave fps of mine, Day Of Defeat has its newest update out recently, DOD-Source... many, many changes from the last DOD and some to my likeing and some not.
(i hate they pulled the Brits out and their neat weapons and i especially hate they've took out the trusty M-3 GreaseGun!!!)
i've purchased DOD source and installed it...and it does seem to run better than the old versions. that's a plus. also, though I don't really like STEAM, the updater for it, it does work well...and makes updating much easier than before.
anyone else play the new DOD and enjoy it?

I have it Beo and I can't stop playing it!
It's class, so satisfying! I hate to say it but I find it much easier
to spend a few hours on IT compared to IL-2. Reasons being:-
*I'm better at FPSs than I am at flying simulators, it seems..
*It doesn't take 20 mins to get to the action
*There is much more of a competition element to it.
I've tried COD 2 but the online play is very much lacking compared
to Day of Defeat.
Ok am off for a game...BTW Beo, Jiggly's fun server is a real good
laugh, they put anti grav on and have loadsa custom maps..

i know what you mean about not being able to stop playing DOD... i've been a DOD-head for a long time... it's like a drug, ya just keep coming back to it over and over again. i also tried COD and MOH and others, but i just keep coming back to Day Of Defeat, something about its gameplay makes you want to play it over and over. part of that is the game itself, and part of it is the MASSIVE WORLD community that has been playing it for years. other first person shooters come and go, but DOD just keeps hanging in there and being popular year after year. and in some ways, it keeps getting better and better.
i wish more of the Irish had the game, really, for team play its TONS better than COD... and the price is right, with the newest incarnation of it, DOD-Source, costing me less than twenty American dollars...a bargin game!
hey, what time do you play... maybe we can hook up for a game?

How does it differ from CoD2? as if it is way better then I just might have to get it

who be asking?
you're not a game spy are you? ---looking to trap me for spending the $19.95 i should have paid bills with on DOD instead?
LOL!
i really can't compare it to COD... it's similiar and yet different in lots of ways. Day Of Defeat, of course, started out as a user mod to half-life...then grew into a cult fave and took off with its own development team... and grew and grew and grew... until finally Valve gaming company bought it lock stock and barrel. they kept most of the original team and added some of their own, and they've forced several changes onto the game...ie, the Steam live updater...and other things. some of which was good, some not so good. but DOD lives on, despite the stumbles.
it really is hard to tell you why DOD is so popular and so long-lived (despite its many incarnations.) its a first person shooter sure enough... its AGAIN similiar to most other first person shooters... you have weapons (WW2 types) you walk or run or crouch around and kill the enemy...either German or (at present) American (they've for the mean time taken the British out of the game...but they may come back,) you play on different sized maps, some good, some not so good, some GREAT... you are awarded points for killing the enemy...but the most points come from capturing enemy flag zones... you can chat by typing key or by built in voice mic... or use preset voice commands to yell about... its strictly multiplayer at the present (there were thirdparty robotic minions to use for practice or solo play called Sturmbots and Shrikebots---but the old versions no longer work in the newest incarnation of the game...but may soon.)
i really don't know or can say what makes the game so much fun... the atmosphere maybe? the graphics? the fact that only by using team play can you really advance through the map and maybe win? the neat weapons? the gillions of servers all over the world for it, the zillions of online players that play it? jeesh---i dunno! ???
but---to me---its fun, and very, very addictive.
hey, and for 19.95..... DOD won't hurt your pocket book even if you buy it and "don't" like it.
give it a try.
PS, i'd love to see an FI: DOD squad!
