Update graphic driver problems

Been trying to update my Nvidia driver and have discovered all sorts of problems.

After deleting the old driver Windows xp didn't find new hardware. Manually using 'add new hardware' didn't find the graphics card either. Upon checking Device Manager sees no hardware at all :? thats right zilch. System restore has the old driver back and all hardware is working fine but XP doesnt know its there.

Not good. Any ideas on fixing this chaps?........that doesn't involve doing a Frank/Dan :D

Try uninstalling the drivers using some kind of driver cleaner.Reboot and then try installing the new drivers.

I don'tknow if it helps, but I once had similar problem and getting rid of theold drivers helped.

Hope you will have this solved soon.

Yeah, go to the Ubi "Tech" forum (if it's up) and find a special driver cleaner. Windows doesn't clean well enough; something to do with the suction.

Check out http://www.drivercleaner.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and look at the bottom of the page for the latest version. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter (they're not that complicated!) as it's a pretty comprehensive and powerful tool, but that said, it works extremely well.

Run the cab cleaner first time round as well.

Good luck mate!

So if you go

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Adapter tab

It does not list the graphics card there?

Is the properties button greyed out on that tab?

If it isn't, you could go into the properties>driver tab and manually point at the new driver?

All this does is get you to the same point as using the computer management/device manger console.

I had this with my old 5200.

In the end I deleted everything to do with Nvidia, removed and replaced the card (good opportunity to clean the dust out of the case) and restarted. XP saw the card and I intalled the driver from the original CD. from there I updated np.

Hope this helps

classic view in control panel has disappeared, but going through Display properties the card is not listed once this current driver is removed.

Removing the card is an option but windows just isnt seeing new hardware.

Had that same prob once...

...and after several people suggested it, I did the following:

1. Shut down PC after removing the drivers and physically remove your Nvidia card.

2. Boot the PC without the card. Then shut down the PC.

3. Physically re-install the card, and ensure that it is seated and locked properly.

4. Boot the PC and re-install the drivers.

This worked for me. Had the same prob with my sound card once and this also fixed that issue. It's always worth a try.

BTW, many folks including me never update drivers unless the current set is giving problems.

Good luck.

Hi G

ok it looks like its been a bit of software thats caused this. I think whats happened is in order to make the computer run a bit faster and save a bit memory the software has shut down the plug and play servece. (maybe)

So if anyone else gets this problem this is how to fix. (windows xp)

1. Go to start then run
2. Type, "serveces.msc" without quotes.
3. You should now have a list of services running, scroll down to plug and play
4. double click on p&p. Is the service dissabled ?If so change to Automatic.
5. Apply the changes then click on the start service button.
7. Ok then restart machine.

Hopefully this will solve your prob without having to re-format the machine.
