I've got an INTEL 865GBF mobo. I've decided that the time has come to start scroungin stuff to fill it up with.

There are some pretty good deals out there on P4's with 1Meg L2 cache and 800FSB with hyperthreading. The 2Meg L2 chips are a LOT higher priced. Is doubling the L2 worth the $$?

What about RAM? PC3200 vs PC2700? I'm leaning toward the 3200 at the moment.

The machine I got now is solid but a bit a dated. The wife has a machine that uses this damned PC800 like I've got here. Thought I'd give her this thing and make it a 1.5G of RAMBUS rig and maybe put a better CPU in it if it will support it. Mine has a gig and hers has 512 so it should truck on pretty good for a while yet.

ahh yes, nothing like a good upgrade eh sir Willie? well m8, the 2meg L2 cache chips definetly write a bit faster, you will notice programs running/opening faster than normal, which is great, but are a bit pricey as you mentioned, worth it in the long run though ;) go for the PC3200 to fill the slots sir. you might already have a good GPU but if you're looking to fill that slot also then you might want to look at ATI's 9800 pro 256mb, they've come down in price recently and still are very good cards, shouldnt have to upgrade GPU for a long time after that. Rambus ram is the fastest ram on the market, its high bandwidth makes for smooth gaming and running of applications, go ahead and make the wifey's day and boost that machine, that way she'll stay off yours, hehe, just kiddin ;)

well sir, good luck and keep us up to date on the developments, nothing like a good upgrade :D
