I got involved with IFSD in 2001/2 with the best intentions of producing loads of models and textures.
Unfortunately I didn't actually know *how* to produce models or textures back then. Come to think of it I still don't know all that much.
My
oeuvre consisted of one matt gray 30-poly model of the Mapas Monument (aka The Obelisk) on Killiney Hill which never made it into any of the IFSD releases
I briefly considered getting serious about flight sim modelling but after seeing some of the
amateur (!) work-in-progress screenshots from IL-2, PF and BoB I realised that it would require me to negate my social life for the next, ooh I dunno, TEN YEARS!!!
But the 3rd Party add-on community for the MFFS series is a perfect example of an OSS-style product that works. The 50 quid you spend on the game itself is nothing compared to the amount of extra enjoyment you get out of it thanks to dedicated 3rd party developers who give up their weekends, weeknights, weekdays, wives, girlfriends, families, daylight, food, for very little if any financial reward.
