I'm not playing full real, about 65-67% If I can remember. It does't bother me that much as the skipper didn't do all that stuff It was normaly the first Officer who did that. My job is to put the sub in a position to shoot @ the ship, and to avoide the escorts. At the moment I'm in July 43 and I managed to get about 48,000pts in the bank. I'm holding out for a typeXXI sub in 44-45. I don't know why your not getting better sub's Gen. The VIIC is the same as the VIIB but with greater range, I wouldn't bother with the VIIC/41 but take the VIIC/42, you'll lose the deck gun but gain 3 torps, and in 44 your not going to get the chance to use the deck gun with out having your head shot off.
What I did was from 39 to mid 42 I didn't use a torp on any ship under 5000tn, If I couldn't sink it the deck guns I just let it go,

I hear you mate. Been playing around 94% but wanted to enjoy the eye-candy in my latest mission - so its down to 85% with the external camera.
Thanks Gen I installed that real mode thingy. Was looking at the hull damage I received the other night.
Still think SHIII is a great game, certainly 1st in its class. However, I would be lying if I also didn't confess that the "thrill" factor is lacking for me. Notwithstanding, when I do "push" myself to enjoy a session or two a week it always ends up being fun.
As for realism, what are we really talking about - mathematics/geometry? I agree with you Rab, the harder settings are not realistic - Captain didn't do all the assignments. On top of that while it was neat to learn how to manually target, doing these calculations has no appeal to me. Diehards find this fun? Anyway, I much prefer the option of letting my Weapon's Officer target, and even then you have to setup the torp arming (i.e., depth, speed, type).

I was playing 94% real too, I must say when and if I did get a hit I was very pleased because I knew it was me who got the hit, But I found that I was only getting about 50% of my hits and it was kind of hard because your pretty much detected after firing your tubes and have to worry about evasive manuvers after that. So with in a few weeks of having the game the thrill factor kind of dwindled with me also, I think I have to just let go of some of the realism and stop feeling guilty about it.. The reality is the captan was the brain in the chain of command and as much as he probably would have loved to fire off topedos or shoot the deck gun that was not his job, so I think from now on I'll just let my weapons officer do all toppedo crap with extenal cameras on ofcourse.

Maths and the other thing, If I have to count over 10 the shoes and socks come off . I think this is by far one of the best sims out there @ the moment, and lets face it, it has to be damn good to get me away from IL-2. But then Subs were and always will be my first love, I stumbled onto IL-2. I never had any intrest in planes or any of that and one day I was in a computer store in Galway and I picked it up and thought this looks ok and that was it for me it eat my life .

Except I forgot about the separate patches for North American vs. Europe and Gen's patch didn't work. I finally clued in after I re-installed the game. At first I thought it was one of the mods that I had installed previously.
Anyone try SHIII with the new patch? Decided I would re-start a campaign with 91% (everything realistic but with Weapons Officer assistance and Event Camera). However, first I'll give those single missions a go.

Tried it last night with both the 1.4,and the militry mods from the site.
Didnt have time yet to creep into enemy port, liked the new dock cranes at St Nazaire,Hunt Class still very tenacious.
Got nailed by one in a snow storm came charging out of the gloom at 3.00am,am in 43 and the going gets tougher, have sttled/compromised on 56% realism for this career.
Funny thing found four C3's at dead stop, but no convoys.
Nice game tho dont you think?

Indeed. I think this is a very well done game, but struggling with trying to maintain a higher level of interest. Something about dogfighting or FPS action that ruins you for a quality (read slow pace) experience like SHIII. But determined to enjoy another campaign with the sonarman finally fixed.

I still have it installed, does that count Macca? I did play it a couple of weeks ago.
In all honesty, though, while I think it has been well done, this type of gaming isn't really for me. My first game I ever purchased where I didn't get my full money's worth of playtime. Nonetheless, still might play it a bit in the future, at least until the expansion for R:TW comes out. I'm hearing some good comments about AOEIII too.

I say Dex. How acurately is the Antrim Coast modelled? Could you get to the H&W drydocks etc? See Carrickfergus? It'd be worth it for that... and what the hell were you doing in a Uy off the Antri....never mind. Anyway do you think you could get down the Lough? Could TWO of you get there? That would be fun. Cheerio.
