Ok....
I won't write a review, as there are lots of them all over the Internet/
Al I can say is that this is a great game wiith lovely graphics, beautiful music, loads of shapr and dangerous items and folks wearing strange steel caps on their heads.
And it runs very well on my rig - maxed effects and details of units, med quality textures, low vegetation and grass. I'm thinking of going higher with the texture qualoity. Ah ,and bloom and stuff, antialiasing and anizotropic filtering is on.Unit scale- maxed.
Funn things - sometimes, while your cavalry is charging, you can notice that a rider may have an accident, fal from his horse, etc.really cool.
And now the combat itself is looking better than in Rome, no rarely you will see your soldiers attack some invisible opponents when two or more units clash togetherand no soldier is standing in front of yours.. Individual soldiers will fight with individual soldiers, sometimes perform some finishing move, aaargh...sweet
I give it 9/10

Ok, I tried with the highest texture settings and it was unplayable. So I came back to med textures and maxed grass and vegetation without any loss of smoothness...the maxed textures are probably too hard for my card, which has only 128 MB of RAM.
anyway, it looks now like this

here my stupid general died....

Doesn't it look nice?

Very nice mate! Thanks for your game impressions. Still sitting on the fence. While I definitely will get this game, at this point not sure for Christmas or after the 2nd patch in February. So many negative posts floating around.
Last night I finally tried RTR (Rome Total Realism) Mod (well actually RTR Platinum for 1.5 users) and so far really enjoyed it! Large map, nice interface, interesting units, and much better AI play. What really surprised me was the formation and movement of units. Why couldn't CA make their games better?
Anyway feel free to provide further information and screenshots mate.

Installed RTW Gold and NTW 2
- only problem with NTW is Custom battles created with battle map editor wont load.
also everyone in multiplayer seems to be using a different version.

Well got it installed, patched it up and playing. Got some problems with the text (it was unreadable) but the official site said to turn off my Catalyst AI on my GC and all is well. Great game it is and addictive as hell. Chose England and made allies with the French. Big mistake! The Froggies stabbed me in the back. So what did the old AB do? Rained Holy hell down on 'em and now I occupy all of France!
Do I invade Scotland? Nah, better wait 'till they deliver me Scotch Whiskey first.
The only thing that peeves me is that the bloody Moors are sending pesky salesmen and they're taking away all of my assets.
Better invade the bastards!
Tacticals I HIGHLY recommend this game!

Great way to play (IMHO - coz I find journey to conquest the whole of Europe ridiculous, as in the medieval times there was something in the kind of balance of power) is to try to keep your country in your historical borders. Stop your neighbours from conquering you.If you just keep them away, not conquer them, you may find yourself facing a much more powerful enemy, which is much more fun than conquering hordes of peasants and other poor units. Now I'm defending my country-yes, Poland- from the Holy Roman Empire, actually I have just regained Stettin - old lands of our ancestors
, and Breslau, not moving any more west, unless they make me do so.Anyway, I will only kick their armies, not capture cities. BTW, my good pal the Pope has just excomunicated HRE due to their attack on me - and I'm one of Papa's fav kings
FEw turns more and maybe I'll ask Papa to call a crusade against HRE. I play on hard settings, it is much more rewarding, medium is just a bit easy.
Great game.
BTW
I need some nice genreals. Anybody wanna take my princess for a wife?:)

Yes, Macca taking the whole of Europe is a tall order. I keep a large Navy to protect England and to ship envoys long distances. I fell from grace with da Pope (I call him DA MAN!) and was ex-communicated for attacking France because she's Catholic also (Heck everyone's Catholic in Europe!) But now I'm in good standing with a new Pope now. As for marrying, well, my king has a mistress in London and she's 'Muy Caliente!! (HOT!)
The Scots have taken what is now Ireland. Ain't virtual history strange or what?

Indeed;)
So you play as the ruler of England, you say?

?
Sometimes, when Da Man calls a crusade and you gather a crusade army, it may be attacked by one of your Catholic enemies. If they do conduct such an attack, there is a big possibility that your pal Da Man will excommunicate this Catholic country! I had it once with Hungary - my crusaders were marching south-east (at the time I was in war with the Hungarians, even though we - the Polish and Hungarians- are said to be almos like brothers). While crossing Hungarian territory these crazy folks attacked me. Not only had I and awfully powerful army (lots of heavy cavalry, archers, some mercenaries, in general - flag symbol fully filled) with which I wasted them, stepping loads of them into the mud, killing almost all of them and taking ransom for the few that didn't have the honour of meeting my soldiers' blades nor spears nor arrows nor their horses' horshoes, but also the Pope, as an answer to whose call I gathered this powerful army with the aim to free the Holy Land in the name of ***, he excommunicated them, and later called a crusede against them. Oh, poor people of Hungary, not good for you was raising your blade against noble Polish believers, against the will of the succesor of St.Peter. Now your souls are thrown into everlasting fire....Damn, too much poetry....
Anyway.
As you can see..
I really like this game
anyone can recommend some good medieval or just-after-medieval poetry?
Were I to become a king...hesitate shall I not!

Wait a minute folks. According to all the whiners over at the official Total War site this game is completely busted. Are you sure you are really having all this great fun?
What about the passive AI? The two-handed weapons problem? The siege lag? The crazy diplomacy? And the other million things people say are wrong with this game?
So confess before I start to feel insecure about my decision to wait until the next patch before buying this game. Please! [-o<

Well, TactS...in my case it is like this:
i think that whining has grown to the rank of art for some folks, like those at TW forums. There are no bugless games in the world.I believe that it is a much more attractive approach to play the game and enjoy it instead of playing it and haveing a list of bugs on a seprate piece of paper and placing a mark after you find of the listed bugs. "Passive AI...let's see....ok, it is passive - checked... wrong this...checked, wrong that- checked." Of course ,the ame could be better, but it is good anyway. The AI could be better, true. But I hope it will be improved with the next patch. Alsa, this game will be a platform for many future mods, like maybe M2Total Realism
, or anything else, just like rome was. And it has better graphics and gives more possibiliteis for the modders.
Just look at Il-2 series. It could be way better if Oleg didn't make the FM worse over the years. But we still enjoy the game for the sake of fun, not being uber-realistic simulation.
And about the millions of peoplewhining about M2TW. They whine ,whine, whine, have some strong points here and there. But after they post another 100 whining posts at the forums they close their browsers and go and play the game. Where do they know all the bugs so well? I wouldn't have noticed some of them if i wasn't looking for the after reading some whining posts.
So if you ask me "should I get this game" I say yes, I recommend it. I'm having at least as good time as I had with Rome, because I'm more interested in the Dark Ages. After you conquer the whole known-at-the-time world try playing it on high difficulty and just keep the country in one piece - sometimes it may be really hard. And when I say hard I also mean fun and enjoying. And still, the community will provide us with lots of great modifications and improvements, so keep that in mind also.
My a bit long 2 cents.

There is one thing i miss from this game...maybe more, but this one is a BIG one - online campaign..
nothing is perfect;)
