Sorry bout today. Having some weird issues with this damn new version of Hyper Lobby. Maybe it is to do with XP64 I do not know. In either case, I hope to be back up for next Sunday's session.

Stats are up, as usual give them a looksee and let me know if its wrong (very possible, MLR a bit wonky at the mo).

Well done Falcon, 20 missions alive (who would have thought it :) ), and Scott is not far behind on 15. Looking like we will have a new flight leader for next week, eh Stu 8) .
Its island hopping stage now, so its all carrier based, best you all get some practice taking off and landing on a carrier again, this time in F6Fs and SBDs.

From now on chaps, you will really need to read the brief, as taking off and following someone is'nt on, there are at least three flights and all have different tasks, so check your squadron number and flight then read the brief.

I estimate we have approx 6 Sundays worth of missions left, so give or take a Sunday when I'm working it should finish about the end of Jan.

On our front page, Gen has put up images from last Sundays missions, if you look at numbers 10 and 11 you will see yours truly coming a cropper.

The reasons are two......

1/ AI has a tendency to target the lead.(mine is the place of honour :))
2/ No covering wingman.
3/ monty python.

This fight was at least 2000 - 3000 ft above everyone else, as you had all lost altitude chasing zeros.
The problem here is that when the enemy has been sighted everyone goes into target fixation mode(including me), after this length of time we should at least have moved onto flying in pairs, I know of at least two who have been flying pairs( the two who have been alive the longest, coincidence :?: ).

Now the next bit, we left the bombers to fend for themselves....
pictures No. 18 - 23, what happens, they get bounced by KI61s and where were we, all over the bleeping sky is where.

We need to be more organized. Can we give it a bit more thought this coming Sunday. Not looking for yes sir no sir.

The fundamentals are... altitude, pairs and protecting bombers and getting back in one piece.

Some questions for you....

1/ Should we have left a covering force or perhaps got the bombers to circle at a given point until the zeros were destroyed so we could form up with them again?
2/ should we try having someone call all the shots, mission dependant(if tasked with two different objectives, then two call the shots)?

If anyone has any ideas or even questions, nows the time.

Vin

Great points - I think our team play as a squad has improved a lot over the past year or so thanks to flying more co-ops and less DF's but there is still a long way to go. I know that most of us like this squadron due to the informality and lack of rank etc that some other squads go in for, but when we fly together we need some sort of organisation and plan.

I have just about finished my Stalingrad campaign now and I think the difficulty will be a step up from "Pearl to Japan" (apart from carrier ops :lol: ). Quite a few of the missions involve fighters escorting ground attack aircraft, and we can expect enemy activity in multiple flights at any point in the mission - from takeoff to landing - not just over the target area. I think this accurately reflects the Eastern front air war at that stage of the war. In many cases we will be outnumbered and the AI will be in arguably superior aircraft.

There are clues in the mission brief as to what to expect - but as in real life there will also be a few surprises - so flight leaders need to plan what the squad will do on the way to target, over the target, and on the way back, including attack runs, regroup points etc.

I hope it will be fun but there should also be a challenge.

This is the most fun I've had in what ... four years of Irishy IL2?

BUT!

Last week's daytime mission was pretty sloppy. I didn't see the bombers until after they had reached the ships. The fighters were stretched over a line that was probably ten miles long at one point. If we're talking fast A-20's and climbing fighters, I think we should all get together as soon as possible. An initial assembly point near the field sounds good.

I tried to stay with the mass blob of fighters until the lead blob of fighters met the enemy. When that happened the blob evaporated into a very fine mist and whatever organization we had was gone. I lucked out later and caught three Ki's returning from chewin' up the bombers. I guess they were low on ammo cuz they put up very little fight.

Being lead is hard, navigating is very hard, but if one can pair with two, three with four and so on and STAY together then we're half-way there.

One gets the shot, two protects (follows) one. One gets a kill and then they reverse rolls.

Briefing: Wing Lead gives the briefing, organizes the wing and elements. Elements brief each other. Wing lead navigates. Element Lead navigates, their wing man's job is to follow. Study the map and try to consentrate on always knowing where you are. I KNOW that's tough, especially on long flights. I know I usually depend on someone else ahead to get me there and then I just try to figure out where I am after the action and hope for the best going home.

Wrong wrong WRONG!

Bad Falcon! Lazy Falcon!

~~~
Gah! Too early in the AM for me. Finding that dern carrier on return is tough.
Nellip's missions ... was it Nellip's Russian missions a few weeks ago? Anyway on the recent missions in Russia there seems to ALWAYS be a bad guy or two that hit us on the way home. That is EXTREMELY annoying but very cool.
Okay, I'm getting really random here ... later,
Falcon
