Wireless Cable Modem/Gateway
My aging Linksys WCG200 Wireless Cable Gateway is giving me interminable drop-outs forcing me to re-boot the darned thing several times a day now.
Time for a new unit.
Linksys no longer offers a combo unit, so I'm looking for suggestions.
Motorola?
TrendNet?
Buffalo?
NetGear?
ACME Industrial-Sized?
The vendors all say they're great, but the reviews are mixed, so I'm going to the folks that use it the same as I do (mostly)...gaming!
Keeping in mind that often the bad reviews are by idjits that couldn't configure Lego blocks, I'm leaning toward the Motorola SB series.
What say you IT freaks?

Re: Wireless Cable Modem/Gateway
I also use a linksys cable wireless modem and have to say that it has been a true legend for me.
I often have people at work saying to me that they are having a problem with their wireless at home and nine times out of ten they are using netgear routers.
I would say have a look for another linksys router mate as they seem to be far more reliable than most of the competition.

Re: Wireless Cable Modem/Gateway
Thanks for the tip, Kev.
Cisco bought out Linksys for pennies on the dollar.
My biggest problem is my ISP.
Comcast. Bastards.
They really want their customers to rent their equipment, so they regularly "upgrade" and if you don't have their equipment, they limit you as to waht units they consider "acceptable". In other words, they blacklist certain equipment, and even provide the dates they'll do it.
Bastards.
And I'm stuck with them if I wish to continue flying online. Everything else around here is DSL (too slow) or Optical (too expensive to have them run it up my street to my home).
Looks like I'll have to go the modem+wireless router method, and my eyes are burning from the searches.

Re: Wireless Cable Modem/Gateway
I still dream of haing cable again...even though there is only one supplier in the UK.
On a fairly crappy ADSL... seemingly 100's of km from the nearest exchange.
Annoying thing is, there is a cable run that grosses over the end of my road... 50 meters away...so close yet so far....

Re: Wireless Cable Modem/Gateway
Nothin' a Ditch Witch couldn't handle.
Ordered up a new Cable Modem (Cisco/Linksys CM-100), Wireless Router (Cisco/Linksys E4200) and a Wireless N USB adapter (Cisco/LinksysAE1000) for the missus yesterday.
Today her laptop crapped out, so tonight we ordered a new Fujitsu Lifebook NH570 with a 18.4 inch screen.
She is allowing me to order a new MB, CPU, and RAM for my gaming system, and even suggested a W7 64-bit OEM 3-pack so I can upgrade all three of my units. I think she feels guilty cuz of the $$$ we had to shell out for the one she wanted.
Because finding a RAM upgrade for my 5-year old Intel DX38BT MB I'm looking at a EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard/Intel I7-950 combo at New Egg and adding a Viper Extreme 12GB kit. I can use my GT8800 Ultra and current Hitachi 1TB HD for a while yet, and she did say to "keep it under $1000, asshole!".
Right. She's asking me to keep it down.
I wonder if $1028.97 +shipping would stroke her out.
If it does, ya think it may mean that I get to acquire her new laptop, too.

Dan
When it comes to computer parts my missus always tries to limit me but I always go over that by a few quid here and there and all she does is roll her eyes and shrugs her shoulders. After five years she eventually stops reminding me that I spent all that money on computer parts LOL I've known elephants that forget quicker
