I bought one of these last week and maybe some of you are thinking about it too. If you are maybe this will help..
If you haven't already seen it the clip replaces the trackhat. It attatches to your mic/headphones with an adjustable clip and intead of reflective patches uses three low intensity LED's that are powered via a powertap on your trackir plug.
You need to using either Trackir 4 or 3 with Vector expansion. You also need to running the latest Trackir software and even if you are not thinking of getting the clip I would recommend upgrading to the lastest software as it is less memory intensive than the old one.
Setting up was pretty easy- just plug the clip in and attatch it to your headset. you get a very small tips and hints booklet as to how best position the the clip and your trackir. You need to select the trackclip as the tracking source through the software and the first thing you notice is that the four red lights on your Trackir arent lit up anymore. This is because the clip is an active light source instead of relying on reflection. both the green and blue lights operate as normal.
The only setback I had was in getting the position of the Trackir relative to the clip right. With the trackhat my set up seemed to work best with the TrackIr slightly below eye level looking up. With the clip this caused some pretty awfull tracking especially at check-six position and when looking down onto the instrument panel. Moving the TrackIr up onto the top of the monitor (remember where you put that little clip and sticky pad that came in your trackIr box ?) and over to the left sorted it out perfectly.
Once set up I dont actually think it is any more accurate than the trackhat in IL2 but if like me you always hated the hat it is brilliant. Using it with 6DOF games (I tried it with First Eagles) I think it may be marginally better that the hat. You do have an extra wire running from your headset but the cable is nice and long so it doesnt restrict head movement any.
Overall I am glad I got it just to be rid of the hat- the metal clip was always pinging off mine when I least needed it and the hat itself was a freebee from a fertilizer company so absolutely lovely in every respect. If you dont mind the hat I can't see any great advantage to the clip in terms of performance and it aint cheap (mine was about £30)
I hope this may be of use
