FI Skin download/usage

Post by :FI:Genosse » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:47 am

Folks!

As you also experienced in yesterday´s sessin the lags we had were huge. Therefore I ask you to download all necessary skins (F4U, F6F and SBD5) for the rest of the Pearl to Japan campaign in order to avoid lags by skin downloads.

Ty for your attention! For a smoother and better gameplay!!! :D

^:)

EDIT - (Gurb)

Split from the Pearl to Japan thread as it is a bit of a seperate issue that needs looking at in it's own right.

Thanks Gen!

Did you hear that everyone - Everyfink! So make sure you tick 'em off as you copy them over! Don't leave nuffink out like I obviously did Sunday.

Falc, do you wanna suggest a forefit for anyone who turns up and doesn't have the skins loaded?

Yes I've had too much coffee already today. :D

I'm still confused about which skins to download. Is there a zipped up "all in one" package?

If there is, and it's less than 100MB, I'd be happy to host it on my website for you all. The confusion involved may discourage new pilots, methinks.

On the first session yesterday I saw no other skins either. On the second and third sessions all was okay and I had changed my settings.

Yo. Can we disable skins on the client side so if we're missing one we don't slow everyone down?

How much control do we have over this site? Can we open it up for anonymous FTP transfers? Then we can get it all in one pop.

Actually guys, I was thinking more along the lines of a more sinister type of punishment.....

Yes that's right, not only are the grave offenders going to be hexed by that cheeky Mistress of the Dark (only if you're 18 or over), but they are also going to have to go to Paris, France.....

Titter ye not!

Agree, the current structure for the skin dowload are is at best pretty crappy :)

Partly my fault as I kinda was going to try and do a frontage for it but got involved in other things.

Also Falcon's fault as I'm sure he will admit later
a it was all his idea
b for coming up with the folder structure you see there now.... I tried to dissuade him, but would he listen????

But remember we are a "NO BLAME COMMUNITY" ;)

It is kinda early days in the distribution and usage of the skins so all contributions welcome!

The current "one off install" is an exe at approx 1.2Gb, yes that is a shit load of skins :)

and that's just the "red"ones :?

Also to bear in mind if you want to mimic the skins folder in the FB install you are looking at repeating skins in each plane folder (e.g. an I16 would go into two skin folders, a Spit IX etc...) guess an extra 25% on the exe above?

Also, still in the errata stage, recompile that file each time a skin gets edited, no thanks. Especially as to see the change everyone would have to re download the exe or have access to the individual skin file and know where to find it/put it.

I don't have any intention to make it an anon ftp server. A more wildly distributed user/password maybe.

...and who ever put the folder FI_wlppr%20wide/ there...well best make a back up copy of it as it won't be there by the weekend. It does not form part of the skinning project thingy. No point adding unrelated files there, it just compounds the current administration problems.
