yeah... i was so disappointed with CFS2 that i refused to buy CFS3... considered it junk and would not spend a plug nickel for it.
and then just yesterday, a small package came addressed to me and postmarked from back in the dark ages... a lost package from MS! that had been setting somewhere in a dark, damp, postal warehouse somewhere for quite some time. you see, i had moved sometime back about the time of the initial MS CFS3 release and the package (a freebie from MS for work done on CFS1 and CFS2) and instead of forwarding the mail to my new address, it had got sidetracked and lost. and some poor sot found it and decided to try and resend it and viola! now i have it.
what a deal! makes me wonder how much MORE mail i have floating around out there somewhere in limbo!
after opening the package and seeing what it was, i started to send it sailing for the garbage can, but decided to "what the hell!" install it anyway...just to see what it was about. well, i did...and you know, it ain't TOO shabby. yeah, IL2 has it beat six ways to Sunday....but really, it ain't that bad. initial impression is that other than IL2, it's most likely the second best WW2 combat flight sim around at the present time. and its WAY better than MS CFS2...which even though i worked on it...was a bit of trashy shyte.
i'm just now checking out the thing and seeing what's available on the net to download...as that was always the FUN part of the MS flight simulator and early CFS sims anyway.
any of you guys still flying CFS3 and can comment with suggestions?
a surprised,
Beowolff

Still have a flight now and again. But OMG Beo there is SO much you can do to improve the basic sim. Not at home right now but will post some links when I can.
Firstly there is a patch from MS, there on in its up to you. Lots of freeby stuff, improved scenery lots of improved stock and new planes, some amazing sound files that make a Jug sound like a 2000hp WWII aircraft - not a tractor.
Windingmans scenery is a big emprovement.
There is also Shockwaves stuff. Bombers to fly, Lancaster, Flying Fortress and improved graphics but you pay for that.
Lots of tweaking to get it smooth but that is pretty straightforward.
Best of all is TIR with vector expansion.....absolutely changes the game.
need TIR 3 or 4 though. You can get earlier TIR to work but you need to download a programme called TIRattack.
Oh and just come out is a free (600mb!) WWI add-on called 'Over Flanders Fields' which is good.
:FI:Mikester had a go on my machine with the Jug .....couldn't get him off it.
Takes a lot of time to get it running that well however, there's no online to speak of, AI are pretty annoying and the FM is nowhere as good as IL-2. But its a stayer on my machine.

right, Gadje... found the patch right enough and installed. also downloaded a couple of stringbeans from the Ground Crew site... marvelous work there and straightforward installing them...a drop and fly sorta thing.
the basic flight models are a bit too simplistic... so i suppose its off to the 1% boys next---if they're still around, to see if i can get some a bit more realistic. the models though are lovely (so far) though definitely not exactly in the IL2 class...though some i've seen (but not downloaded yet) are pretty dog gone close!
main thing i hate about it (right off the bat) is the stupid 3D game interface with the retarded looking 3D pilot standing about on the flying field scratching his arse and stretching and such... stupid and unrealistic looking---what were THEY thinking on that? i'd of rather had something much more un-advanced...a simple 2D arming screen rather than that 'tarded looking bozo. oh well.
yeah, send me any good links you can come across if you please.
and no multiplayers still about, eh? too bad. maybe when i get it all acting right, we can have a go at it.
