I just can't make it work. i've even uninstalled IL/PF and had a new go but still nothing. Could the problem be caused by me trying to do the install on an external drive ?(can't think of a reason why this should be the cause though)

Which you didn't. It is not much of a game. The gameplay is arcade like, AI lacking to say the least and you don't even enjoy single shot weapons as you get a five shot carbine revolver from the start of each mission.
